Hadrian Primary School awarded Gold in the National SMSC Quality Mark
Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural (SMSC) development is the over-arching umbrella that encompasses personal development across the whole curriculum. It is essential to the academic progress of pupils. It has the potential to raise aspirations, develop empathy, deepen spirituality, connect young people with their communities and develop their core values.
Hadrian Primary School are very proud to share their achievement in the award of Gold level of the National SMSC Quality Mark. The award recognises the contribution of the school’s curriculum and ethos in developing the whole child.
Hadrian’s motto; Create, Discover, Empower was an integral part of the school ethos and attitude which supported the achievement of the gold award. SMSC was evident in all parts of Hadrian’s application process.
The verification report mirrors Ofsted’s expectation of SMSC ‘at the heart’ of school development. SMSC is so embedded within the school curriculum that during discussions with the SMSC Verifier Sandra Saint, pupils were asked how they fit in so much replied saying that “It doesn’t feel like we’re busy”. Other strengths highlighted in the report were ‘the real feeling of community spirit with events such as the Summer Spectacular performed at the Custom’s House, annual Mela and Mini Police’. Pupil voice was seen as ‘strong and valued; pupils are involved, listened to and empowered’. Hadrian also has the unique positioning being opposite ‘Arbeia Roman Fort and having a fishing port at the end of the school grounds’.
“When I entered Hadrian, the French music and your school environment made me feel like I was on holiday! I received such a warm and welcoming greeting from every member of staff that I met during my visit and this is obviously constantly role-modelled as the gate was held open for me by a pupil on my arrival.” - Sandra Saint SMSC Verifier.
The staff and pupils at Hadrian Primary are extremely proud to be awarded the Gold level in the National SMSC Quality Mark; which is the highest level available.
“We are delighted that our school has been recognised nationally for our SMSC provision. SMSC is a huge part of not only education, but the development of the whole child. We aim to provide children with the skills and attitudes they need to successfully prepare for their future.” – Mrs Fox, PSHE Lead, Hadrian Primary School
Hadrian Primary School Choir Wow HRH Princess Ann at Christmas Carol Concert
Hadrian Primary School choir, along with past pupils now in Y7 at Mortimer and Harton, had the privilege of entertaining HRH Princess Royal at the annual Mission to Seafarers Christmas Carol Concert in London in early December.
The choir were invited to perform by Revd Cannon Andrew Wright, who saw the children sing at the South Shields Mission to Seafarers Sea Sunday event earlier this year in July. He was so impressed, he asked the choir to represent the South Shields Mission at the prestigious Carols event on December 3rd in London. Along with the Y7 pupils who left Hadrian in the summer, the choir travelled to London to sing alongside the famous Llyod’s Choir.
Following the service, the children were given a private audience with HRH Princess Royal, who spent time discussing the children’s performance amongst other topics.
“The opportunity to support the South shields Mission to Seafarers and represent our local area and community, as well as showcase our children’s amazing talent was simply magnificent. This once in a lifetime experience has filled both the hearts and minds of our children and has left them with special memories for the rest of their lives.” – Mrs Giles, Choir lead teacher Hadrian Primary School
“The children were absolutely outstanding, everybody enjoyed their performance so much, including Her Royal Highness, The Princess Royal, who was so impressed, she commented on how good the choir were in her closing speech. Not only was their singing awesome, but their behaviour was superb. They were an absolute delight and I was deeply impressed.” - Revd Cannon Andrew Wright, Secretary General, The Mission to Seafarers
“The choir from Hadrian Primary School have supported the Mission to Seafarers in South Shields for a number of years and have sang at a number of events over this period. They performed in London with real distinction and were a credit to the Mission in South Shields, the school and the town itself.” - Peter Boyack, Chairman of The Mission to Seafarers, South Shields
The Tempest
by Hadrian Primary School
at The Northern Stage, 9/11/2020
appraised by Josie Lena Davies
I would like to extend my most sincere congratulations to Hadrian Primary and Nursery School
for your tremendous production of The Tempest as part of the 2019 Shakespeare Schools
Festival. It was an excellent night of theatre, and I’d like to highlight a few aspects that really
stood out.
The design elements of this production were beautiful and the costumes, set, and props
transported the audience directly into the world of the play and conveyed the status of the
characters in a relatable, relevant way. Not only did this cast make this story entertaining
throughout, they also showed a clear understanding of Shakespeare’s script and great craft as
storytellers.
The characters all showed clear purpose and intention and it was brilliant seeing how much they
had grown in confidence between the company workshop and performance day. The narration
was expressive, loud and clear and helped the audience understand the story beautifully. There
were also some brilliant comic performances, especially from the drunken characters who added
lots of humour into the production.
The dancing in this production was remarkable and aided the characterisation hugely, elevating
Ariel into a mystical being. The singing was also incredible and the vocal power filled the entire
space as well as providing strong dramatic moments. It’s hard to believe the age of these
performers given how skilled they are. The professionalism of the company was astounding and
we were astonished by the level of talent in the cast. I wouldn’t be surprised to see members of
the cast on many professional stages in years to come.
It was wonderful to see a director creating a performance that played to the strengths of each of
the cast members and showcased their talents really effectively. It was also brilliant to see how
supportive and encouraging all of the students were to each other and towards the other school.
This was an impressive, polished and dynamic Tempest from a talented, intelligent and focused
cast.
Performing Shakespeare’s words on a professional stage takes bravery, resilience, and
creativity. You should be immensely proud of what you and your teachers have achieved in this
Season of Infinite Variety. I hope to see Hadrian Primary and Nursery School in the 2020
Festival!

Hadrian Primary School is one of the few mainstream primary schools in the North of England to have the Inclusion Quality Mark and following successful reassessment, the school has again been successful in being recognised for the inclusive work they do. The school is also being put forward to become an ‘IQM Centre of Excellence’, to support and work alongside other schools.
Educational inclusion is about equal opportunities for all pupils, whatever their age, gender, ethnicity, attainment or background.
The assessment involved looking at all aspects of the way the school provides opportunities for and supports children to access the curriculum, as well as the work they do with parents and carers.
“Hadrian Primary School is an excellent example of inclusive practice in action. There is a clear ethos of high aspiration, support and challenge, which when combined with the high priority given towards the wellbeing, social, physical and emotional needs of pupils, sets the tone for the inclusive framework.”
Laura Smith, Inclusion Mark Assessor
“For the third time we have been awarded the Inclusion Quality Mark. Pupils, parents, staff, governors and the local community have yet again demonstrated their whole-hearted commitment to inclusion. I am pleased to say that our outstanding report is a reflection of our hard work and efforts. We will continue to support inclusive practice and increase life chances for all pupils who may experience barriers to learning.”
Annette McStea, Inclusion Manager
In a special event held at the House of Lords, Hadrian Primary School was recognised as one of the top 50 schools in the EdTech 50 Schools Report for its use of education technology to support excellent teaching and enhance learning.
The report highlights digital flagship schools that demonstrate a focused sense of what is useful to them in terms of technology – whether it be in supporting teaching, cutting teacher workload, collaboration across staff teams or consolidating knowledge, enhancing creativity and broadening experiences across the curriculum.
As part of Hadrian’s application, they highlighted how technology can be used to give children a purpose for writing and show the children and teachers that their work does not just stop in the classroom, and that it can be seen all over the world. This gives children a purpose for writing and encourages the children to do their very best. Hadrian also discussed how technology is now an integral part of the classroom and how, through strategic planning - including careful consideration of infrastructure and staff training - they have developed a sustainable programme where iPads are used to support both teachers and pupils. Hadrian’s objective is to enhance, rather than to substitute, the traditional learning tools available to their staff and pupils, recognising the benefits that technology can add to existing, effective classroom practices and the transformational possibilities it can bring to the classroom.
The staff and pupils at Hadrian Primary are extremely proud to be one of the EdTech 50 digital flagship schools and delighted to be included amongst such an impressive group of peers. “We are delighted that our school has been recognised nationally for our use of ICT to support learning. ICT is a huge part of not only education, but the modern world and the world of work. We aim to provide children with the skills and tools they need to successfully access technology, so that it enhances their learning and work.” – Miss Pattison, ICT Co-ordinator Hadrian Primary School
“The improvements in results and in the aspirations of pupils to succeed stand out. Technology is embedded across the school, but I like the way staff and pupils are still looking at ways to develop further and encouraging enjoyment to learn. Being able to reach a real audience opens a window into the world and has impacted on writing standards.” - Ty Goddard is co-founder of the Education Foundation and chair of Edtech UK
