Expressive Arts and Design

Expressive Arts and Design in Early Years is divided into two parts: Creating with Materials and Being Imaginative and Expressive

Creating with Materials:

The children are encouraged to select their own resources to create paintings and drawings. We encourage them to think about what they would like to create and what materials and resources would be the most effective. They will have the opportunity to experiment with colour, design, texture, form and functions before sharing their creations with others, explaining the process they have used. We encourage them to make materials and resources that could be incorporated into their own role play.

Being Imaginative and Expressive:

Children are encouraged to represent their ideas, thoughts and feelings through music, dance, art, role play, stories and design technology. We spend time watching different types of performances within dance, art and music and the children comment about how this makes them feel. We provide children with the resources and skills for them to engage in imaginative play. In Reception we encourage all children to participate in role play activities with their friends, as this promotes positive relationships and creative thinking.

We also spend time singing and performing nursery rhymes, songs, poems and stories. This gives them the opportunity to freely express themselves and build confidence.
