Understanding the World
Understanding the World is split into 3 parts: Past and Present, People, Culture and Communities and The Natural World.
Past and Present:
This work is focused on children being aware of similarities and differences between the past and now, drawing on their experiences and what is being read to them to discuss things that have happened and may happen in the future.
People, Culture and Communities:
We provide opportunities for children to talk about those in their lives who are familiar to them and what role they have in society. Circle time provides all children the chance to share any special events or celebrations which may have happened within their family. We learn about similarities and differences between our families and different religions and cultures. We share our experiences regarding travelling abroad and the different celebrations that take place across the world. Within the stories we share and our personal experiences, the children explore their immediate environment and have access to maps, atlases and globes.
The Natural World:
By using the outdoor environment, children explore the natural world around them making observations and drawings. They understand changes in the natural world including seasons and changing states of matter. By looking closely at different parts of the world, children have the opportunity to discover and discuss similarities and differences in environments around the world.
