Hadrian Primary School awarded Gold in the National SMSC Quality Mark
Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural (SMSC) development is the over-arching umbrella that encompasses personal development across the whole curriculum. It is essential to the academic progress of pupils. It has the potential to raise aspirations, develop empathy, deepen spirituality, connect young people with their communities and develop their core values.
Hadrian Primary School are very proud to share their achievement in the award of Gold level of the National SMSC Quality Mark. The award recognises the contribution of the school’s curriculum and ethos in developing the whole child.
Hadrian’s motto; Create, Discover, Empower was an integral part of the school ethos and attitude which supported the achievement of the gold award. SMSC was evident in all parts of Hadrian’s application process.
The verification report mirrors Ofsted’s expectation of SMSC ‘at the heart’ of school development. SMSC is so embedded within the school curriculum that during discussions with the SMSC Verifier Sandra Saint, pupils were asked how they fit in so much replied saying that “It doesn’t feel like we’re busy”. Other strengths highlighted in the report were ‘the real feeling of community spirit with events such as the Summer Spectacular performed at the Custom’s House, annual Mela and Mini Police’. Pupil voice was seen as ‘strong and valued; pupils are involved, listened to and empowered’. Hadrian also has the unique positioning being opposite ‘Arbeia Roman Fort and having a fishing port at the end of the school grounds’.
“When I entered Hadrian, the French music and your school environment made me feel like I was on holiday! I received such a warm and welcoming greeting from every member of staff that I met during my visit and this is obviously constantly role-modelled as the gate was held open for me by a pupil on my arrival.” - Sandra Saint SMSC Verifier.
The staff and pupils at Hadrian Primary are extremely proud to be awarded the Gold level in the National SMSC Quality Mark; which is the highest level available.
“We are delighted that our school has been recognised nationally for our SMSC provision. SMSC is a huge part of not only education, but the development of the whole child. We aim to provide children with the skills and attitudes they need to successfully prepare for their future.” – Mrs Fox, PSHE Lead, Hadrian Primary School
