How education needs are identified

At Hadrian, we use South Tyneside’s SEND in Mainstream Settings Framework. The Framework is to help staff to identify needs, plan support and check if the support is working. The aim is to help every child and young person get the right support at the right time.

The Tiers of Support

Within the SEND in Mainstream Settings Framework, there are tiers of support. These describe the level of support a child may need at a particular point in time.

Every child is different and support may look different even for children who are at the same tier. The aim is always to make sure the right support is in place, reviewed regularly and adapted when needed.

• Universal
  Universal support is known as Quality-First Teaching and inclusive practice that is available for all children.
• Universal Plus
  Universal Plus support includes extra strategies, activities and resources that a teacher may provide building on everyday classroom teaching.
• Targeted
  Targeted support is provided when a child needs support that is more planned and individual than hat is usually available in the class. This may require additional staffing, resources or more personalised planning but remains within the scope of what we can provide as a school.
• Targeted Plus
  Targeted Plus support is appropriate when schools need advice or short-term support from specialist professionals to help meet a child’s needs.
• Specialist
  Specialist is when children need a higher level of support and involvement from specialist professionals because their needs are more significant, complex or long-term.
