This half-term we will be using a variety of texts, including nursery rhymes, Autumn poems, a narrative called 'Hedgehog's Journey and an amazing picture book titled "How To Wash A Woolly Mammoth." We will focus on developing our rhyming skills, writing poetry, storytelling and writing and instruction writing.
This week the children enjoyed playing a variety of rhyming games, forming rhyming strings and learning about similes.
On Monday, the class went onto the field to get some inspiration for their Autumn poems. They found lots of colourful leaves, some Sycamore tree seeds, a few mushrooms and some juicy blackberries. We spent some time developing our vocabulary, using lots of adjectives to describe the things we found.

This week we have used all of our previous work to create an Autumn poem. We thought about what we could see, feel and taste. The children produced some wonderful poems.
The children have now started "Hedgehog's Journey'. We commenced this unit by discussing facts that we knew about hedgehogs. After watching some video clips about hedgehogs and their habitat we created a word board of hedgehog-related vocabulary. We then read the story and the children sequenced the events with adult support.
This week the children have been working on recalling the order of the story independently. They have listened to the story, sequenced the story using words and pictures, and have also created a story map breaking the story into beginning, middle and end. This has all helped to embed the story order so we can begin to adapt the story next week.
