Be Unique;Believe, Achieve, Succeed Together
Welcome to our Year 1 page
Miss Pippin (Monday – Wednesday AM) and Miss King (Wednesday PM – Friday) are our class teachers. We are really looking forward to a great year of learning.
Please keep an eye on the page for class information updates and to see the fun that we are having together! Don't forget that we also have our school Facebook page along with our Google Classroom page. You are very welcome to catch us after the school day to ask any questions or share any important information.
Following transition from Reception, children experience a range of learning opportunities and study the full National curriculum. Our day will include a Sounds-Write phonic session, a Maths lesson and an English lesson. These will gradually be more formal across the Autumn Term. In the afternoons, we will cover our topic work through small guided groups and continuous provision.
The class will complete a Phonics Screening in June 2025. This is a government standardised assessment completed individually with the class teacher. We will be working very hard to decode real and 'alien' pseudo words in preparation.
We are passionate about reading!
Developing reading is a key priority in Year 1. This essential skill is developed through phonics and discussion about the text. Reading at home regularly is strongly encouraged and makes a significant difference to children's progress. Ending the day with a bed-time story is a great opportunity for parents and carers to enrich their children's vocabulary and share a joyful experience together.
Children are required to bring their reading books to school daily. This will give more opportunities to read and change their books.
Homework
A short task will be sent home on Thursdays to complete with your child. This will be English or Maths. To submit homework, please take a photo on a device and upload it to the relevant task on your Google Classroom. Homework is due in on Tuesdays.
PE
Please bring kits in for your PE lesson on Mondays.
Earrings must be removed (or covered) on PE days.
