“Art and Design is not just a subject to learn but an activity that you can practise: with your hands, your eyes, and your whole personality.”
[Quentin Blake, Children’s Laureate]
The Arts at Hadrian
Art is such an important part of our children's education at Hadrian. As well as discrete Art lessons, we try to weave art and creativity in a broad range of curriculum areas. We like to see it more broadly as 'The Arts', that can encompass drama, dance, art techniques and art history, creative writing, poetry, performance, culture, music and so much more. Much of this is regularly showcased in school events that we are so proud of, such as the Carols by candlelight, Summer Spectacular show and our multicultural fair (MELA). We also regularly create fantastic opportunities for children to work with a range of people and institutions such as Gateshead Baltic, local artists and local museum and heritage sites. As a school we are in the application process of applying for the Artsmark Award and have been mentoring other schools in the application process.
At Hadrian we use Plan Bee curriculum planning for the discrete Art lessons that we teach. As Hadrian as several mixed classes, children in Class 7, 8 and 9 will follow the same units but on a rolling 3 year program. This is to ensure children do not repeat units as the move though the school. Classes 4, 5 and 6 also follow this rolling program. See below for the units for 2017-18 and 2018-19.
